This Vatican Jubilee marks 25 years of spiritual awakening, pilgrimage, and celebration deeply rooted in Catholic traditions. It also marks the opening of the Holy Door in St. Peter’s Basilica, a year dedicated to forgiveness, hope, and unity. The ancient tradition initiated by Pope Boniface Vill in 1300 occurs every 25 years, with additional special jubilees called by the Pope on extraordinary occasions.

This Vatican Jubilee Year 2025 theme is “Pilgrim of Hope,” following the challenging year of the COVID-19 pandemic. This theme inspires Catholics to journey toward faith, redemption, and hope for a brighter future.

Pope Francis emphasized the importance of hope and unity in one of his reflections on the theme, which aligns with his teachings.

“We are all called to be pilgrims of hope in a world that too often experiences division, conflicts, and uncertainty. The Jubilee Year is a time to walk together as brothers and sisters, rediscovering the beauty of a human family united in God’s love.”

Key Highlight of the Vatican Jubilee 2025

Opening of the Holy Door

There is a Holy Door in each of Rome’s four main basilicas. The Holy Year officially begins when these doors open. Although these are the basilicas’ major entrances, they are only open during the Jubilee Years. The truth is that stonemasons have bricked up the Holy Door at St. Peter. Before it opens on December 24, 2024, workers must take down the wall behind the door. The Holy Father used to whack the wall ceremoniously with a hammer. Nevertheless, the wall is now taken down before the Christmas Eve rituals because pieces of the brickwork fell perilously close to Paul VI in 1974.
